a) Expect to drain / fill just over 400 ml. Total capacity is about double that but due to all the stuff inside, you will only get half. Technically you should do the fluid change at least twice if you want to replace most of the fluid. If you are not getting 400 ml out of it adjust your suction tube or your transfer case is missing some fluid.
In order to go 200k+ miles without an issue, people who know what they're talking about recommend changing the fluid at 30k miles. You MUST use only the BMW fluid. 1 quart (or is it liter?) is all you'll need, at ~$65, which means about $32/year if amortized. Still much cheaper than oil changes. It's an easy fluid change.
I had the dealer change the ATF at 120,000 miles. Trans was working fine when I sold the car. FWIW, I changed the oil every 15,000 - 20,000 miles when the car told me to. Used a quart of oil every 7,000-8,000 miles when I sold it. BMW got it right with lifetime ATF and oil change frequency as far as I'm concerned.

Dont want to feed those dealer money that they dont deserve. Now I m confused which oil to buy. The manual recommends Castrol.

The filter in not cheap since it is built into the tans pan. Fluid is around $27 per quart and a drain and fill takes up to 6. An online price for a trans service kit is ~$285 including pan/filter/fasteners and 7 quarts of ZF fluid. I highly recommend changing the fluid before 60k-70k miles.

During the first 3 years and 20k miles, it didn't consume any oil between oil changes (roughly 6k miles between changes). In the 4th year, between 20k and 25k miles, I had to put in 2 quarts and it was still showing at the minimal level. Spoke to dealer, they said they found no leaks and it's normal for turbo engines to burn 1qt every 1k miles
